In undergrad I sat through countless zoom calls with vet school students through our pre-vet club. Sometimes these were students who joined in with their school’s recruiter when they were giving a presentation, and other times they were previous club members who were now in vet school. They always told us about where they were from, what their application and interview processes were like, where they got accepted at, and why they chose to attend the school they were now at. One question I always had for them was, “So, what does a day in your life look like?” Now, you’re probably thinking okay, that’s a basic question, and truth be told so did I. This being said, I never understood why the students had a hard time stating exactly what their days and classes were like. It drove me crazy! Didn’t they take the same classes with the same professors every week? Didn’t they have a pretty set in stone schedule?? Honestly, I never really got the answer I craved until I started vet school myself. It would be an understatement to say I was completely thrown off balance by how different a vet school schedule was compared to an undergrad or highschool schedule.

So, the point of this blog post is to describe to you what my class schedule currently looks like. I’m going to pick a random week from this semester so far and tell you what classes I had and when. Keep in mind this is just what two weeks of MY schedule look like. These differ from semester to semester, year to year, and school to school.

A couple things to note:

  • I have to be available for class 8:00am-5:00pm Monday-Friday. This doesn’t mean that I will have class that entire time period each day, but since classes can shift around from week to week, we just have to ensure we’re available during these times.

  • My lecture classes are typically 50 minutes long, and labs vary from 2-3 hours.

  • My exams are always on Mondays. Quizzes may be any day of the week.

  • I’m fortunate enough to go to a school that does their best to ensure we have at least a 30 minute lunch break worked into our schedule each day.

  • One of the biggest adjustments was having multiple hours worth of lectures of one subject back to back.
